Lake Forest Country Day School Celebrates Ten Years Of Excellence In Educating Two Year Olds

Lake Forest Country Day School's Early Childhood Center (ECC) became a bustling "train depot" as more than 100 children, parents, teachers, and friends from around the community came aboard to celebrate the 10th birthday of the School's 1st STEP program for two-year-old students. In 2007, LFCDS added the 1st STEP program to its robust early childhood division which dates back to the School's founding in 1888.

As guests arrived, they received train tickets and a train schedule which mapped out an afternoon of adventures with stories, music, games, crafts, and refreshments. After a musical welcome with Golden Apple-recognized LFCDS music teacher Maria Hempen, guests traveled between the 1st STEP classroom's Expedition Antarctica, the preschool classroom's Marshmallow World, the junior kindergarten classroom's Winter Chalet, and the senior kindergarten classroom's Snowflake Wonderland.

At each stop, ECC faculty led winter-themed activities delivering science, fine arts, and literacy principles in innovative ways. The young travelers made snowpeople skate magically on plates, explored the habitats of arctic animals, and created their own vibrant snowflakes.

"Over the past 10 years, our 1st STEP program has enjoyed tremendous success in providing our youngest students with an engaging and nurturing introduction to the experiential learning environment that is the hallmark of the LFCDS experience," said Sara Walsh, Director of the Early Childhood Center. "From our classrooms to the play-based delivery system of our rich curriculum, the LFCDS 1st STEP program is intentionally designed to inspire and encourage creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and relationship building throughout each individual child's day."
