Toddler Found Unconscious After Apartment Fire Dies; Mother Still In Critical Condition

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A 2-year-old boy found unresponsive in a pool on Fort Wayne’s southeast side Sunday night has died.

Emergency responders were called around 9:30 p.m. on a report of a possible drowning at a home at 4636 Spatz Avenue. Police said the toddler briefly went missing and was found in an above-ground pool and not breathing.

The child was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Delonte Nelson was later pronounced dead. The Allen County Coroner’s Office said the toddler’s cause and manner of death is pending.

Investigators said the incident is believed to have been an accident but they are still talking with people. They’re also trying to figure out how the child ended up in the pool.

The incident is under investigation.
